Analysis shows Savannah economy enjoyed “healthy growth” in Q1 amid a national slowdown

Evan Lasseter reports that the Savannah metro economy continued “healthy growth” to start the year, bolstered by “broad-based” strength across its many sectors, according to the most recent Coastal Empire Economic Monitor by Georgia Southern University. Residential, commercial and industrial sectors all showed growth in Q1 of this year, leading to a full 1% more growth than the previous quarter.

Unemployment claims in Georgia declined last week

Staff reports that initial filings for unemployment benefits in Georgia dropped last week compared with the week prior, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday. New jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, fell to 3,260 in the week ending June 1, down from 4,238 the week before, the Labor Department said.

Wayne Johnson, a former Trump administration official, and Chuck Hand, who is a construction superintendent who was convicted of a misdemeanor for his involvement in the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, are in a June 18 runoff.
