EPA awards $2 Million for Cleanup of Former NWGa Regional Hospital Site

Staff reports that a $2 million grant has been awarded for environmental cleanup work at the former Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital site, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced on Monday. The Rome-Floyd County Development Authority is the recipient of the grant, which comes from the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Nearly $2 million in ARPA seed money sought for workforce development initiative in Athens

Jim Thompson reports that a coalition of local business leaders, educators, neighborhood leaders and others have made a pitch to Athens-Clarke County’s mayor and commission for nearly $2 million in seed money for a sweeping workforce development program dubbed “Athens Achieves.” The request comes as county officials continue allocation of the $57.6 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds provided to the county government under a nationwide $1.9 trillion economic stimulus initiative.

Regional airport celebrates $3 million terminal expansion

Joe Hotchkiss reports that Augusta Regional Airport’s new expansion extends the terminal just a few feet further onto the tarmac, but it goes a long way toward growing the community, area leaders said Friday. Giving the airport an extra 2,000 square feet doesn’t sound like “a ton of space, but it’s actually extremely important what we’ve done in this particular project,” said Herbert Judon, the airport’s executive director, on Friday before the ceremonial ribbon-cutting opening the addition.

Myracle Lewis reports that the new Atrium Health Amphitheater, which has attracted a number of diverse artists to Macon for local concert-goers, is also generating increased revenue for local businesses, according to city officials. The 12,000-capacity venue’s current economic impact data reveals that it has already had a significant influence on Macon-Bibb’s economy after only nearly two months of operation.

Staff reports that a project to preserve Gullah Geechee and African-American heritage and heritage sites in the Golden Isles was showcased Saturday at Epworth by the Sea in a program free and open to the public. Entitled Sacred Ground: Ebo Landing Past and Present, the program consisted of digital stories based on interviews conducted by Mercer University students in collaboration with the St. Simons African American Heritage Coalition.

After years of harassment, election workers head into the primary more confident about their safety

Tammy Joyner reports,  death threats and harassing phone calls and emails got so bad for Douglas County’s top election official that he stopped using the front entrance to the election office building. “It all started in the aftermath of the 2020 [presidential] election and conspiracy theories around elections,” said Milton Kidd, director of elections and voter registration for Douglas, just west of Atlanta.
