Gov. Kemp: Medical Device Manufacturer Gerresheimer Expands in Peachtree City
Staff reports that Gov. Kemp yesterday announced that Gerresheimer, a manufacturer for the pharma and life science industry, will invest more than $88 million in expanding its manufacturing operations in Peachtree City, creating over 200 new jobs for Fayette County.

Girl Scouts Honored at Atlanta History Center

More options to get through airport security: Delta expands Digital ID
Kelly Yamanouchi reports that some holiday travelers flying Delta Air Lines out of Atlanta may notice a new option this year to get through security queues: a Delta Digital ID line. The Atlanta-based airline launched Delta Digital ID at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport earlier this year, opening an expedited security line for its customers who qualify — through a dedicated queue at the domestic terminal’s South security checkpoint.

Georgia’s unemployment rate holds steady in November at 3.4%, number of jobs up
Dave Williams reports that Georgia’s unemployment rate held steady at 3.4% in November for the third month in a row, the state Department of Labor reported Thursday. Several categories again reached record highs, including the number of jobs, which rose slightly by 0.3% last month compared with November of last year to more than 4.95 million.

Georgia children’s hospitals get pediatrics workforce grant, over $700K in total funding

Under the bipartisan federal Children’s Hospital Graduate Medical Education program this year, two metro-area facilities are slated to receive grant funds.

Michael Hall reports that the current shrimp season will last a little longer. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources on Wednesday extended the state’s recreational and commercial food shrimp season to Jan. 18, 2024.

Authority OKs $5 million distribution
James Swift reports that members of the Dalton-Whitfield County Regional Solid Waste Authority voted Monday, Dec. 18, to approve a plan that would allow the authority to distribute $5 million to local governments. Under the agreement, the city of Dalton and Whitfield County would each receive $2.5 million from the authority.

Asia Ashley reports, just weeks from the 2024 legislative session, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is calling on lawmakers to end runoff elections. In Georgia primary elections, when a party’s candidate is chosen, and general elections, the top two vote-getters advance to a runoff when no candidate gets more than 50% of the votes. Louisiana and Mississippi also allow runoffs for general elections in certain races.

Lawmakers eye Medicaid expansion and more mental health services
Jill Jordan Sieder reports that Georgia’s Republican-controlled Legislature’s stiff resistance to expanding Medicaid coverage for low-income Georgians may be wavering a bit, with the prospect of concessions from lawmakers who want to change how new hospital construction projects are greenlighted. Georgia is one of 10 states that has not fully expanded Medicaid per the Affordable Care Act.

Senate won’t confirm Smyre as ambassador, returns nomination to Biden
