‘Relentless efficiency’: Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport ranks No. 1 in North America — again
Staff reports that Business Traveler Awards has picked Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport as its top airport for the second year running, thanks to its proximity to hotels and “relentless efficiency.” In addition to the Best Airport in North America, Business Traveler magazine also gave the Atlanta airport its Service Quality Award for Best Airport at Arrivals Globally, beating out nearly 400 airports in 95 countries.

Norfolk Southern to end payments for relocated East Palestine residents
Kelly Yamanouchi reports that Atlanta-based Norfolk Southern said it will soon stop paying for hotel rooms and living expenses for residents of East Palestine, Ohio, who relocated out of the city after the railroad’s February derailment of a train carrying hazardous materials there. The company said it will end its temporary relocation assistance payments to residents on Feb. 9, 2024, a little over a year after the Feb. 3, 2023 train wreck.

Cobb Unemployment Goes Up Slightly but Still Trails Behind Georgia, Atlanta
Joe Adgie reports, Cobb County, Marietta and Smyrna continue to have lower unemployment rates than the Atlanta or Georgia average, but pure unemployed numbers are up. Cobb County had an unemployment rate of 3.1% in October 2023, unchanged from the month previous but up from 2.6% a year before, according to data from the Georgia Department of Labor

Health officials look to solutions to Georgia’s high HIV rates

The state is ranked second in the nation for the virus rate, after Washington, D.C. “This affects people of all genders, all races and ethnicities and all ages,” said Lauren Middlebrooks of Emory University School of Medicine.

DEA telling pharmacies in Georgia they could be breaking law if they possess, sell medical marijuana

The Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) Diversion Control Division is notifying pharmacies across the state that they could be in violation of federal law if they possess or sell medical marijuana.

Educators name Gerald Greene ‘Friend of Education’
Staff reports that State Rep. Gerald Greene, R-Cuthbert, was recently recognized by the Georgia Association of Educators for his many decades of service to Georgia’s education system. GAE presented Greene with an award as part of its Legislative Honor Roll, naming him a 2023 Friend of Education award recipient, the organization’s highest honor.

Incumbents go down hard across metro Atlanta in Tuesday’s runoff elections
Patrick Saunders reports, the final Election Day of the year in metro Atlanta was marked by a slew of incumbents being ousted across the area, plus Brookhaven residents picked a new mayor to succeed its term-limited one. In the only citywide race in Atlanta on Tuesday, Alfred “Shivy” Brooks appeared to beat the incumbent Tamara Jones by nearly 30 points in the Atlanta School Board At-Large Seat 7 race.

Carter introduces bipartisan legislation aimed at parents’ rights on social media
Staff reports that parents would have the right to see postings on social media by children under the age of 17 under a bipartisan measure introduced in the U.S. House. U.S. Reps. Savannah lawmakers push River Street, Garden City during special session
Jake Shore reports, when Gov. Brian Kemp ordered the state legislature in late October to convene in a special session to redraw Georgia’s voting maps, he was careful to limit its agenda. But tucked into the proclamation was a provision allowing lawmakers to “enact, revise, repeal or amend local laws” that if delayed until the regularly scheduled session in January, would cause “undue hardship” or “undue impairment” of “public functions.”

Full Georgia House vote set for Thursday on congressional map ahead of federal court review
Ross Williams reports that a state House committee approved Georgia’s GOP-drawn congressional maps on a party line vote Wednesday, teeing up the map for a full vote Thursday. That could be the final vote of a special legislative session that began Nov. 29 after U.S. District Court Judge Steve Jones ruled that lawmakers’ last redistricting attempt in 2021 didn’t protect Black voters’ rights under the Voting Rights Act.
