Weather, prices, have been a damper for Southwest Georgia’s 2023 cotton crop
Alan Mauldin reports that it’s been a tough year for the state’s farmers weather-wise, and the cotton harvest that is winding down for the year in southwest Georgia is no exception to that sad reality. Atlanta job growth strong in October to start holiday season

Kanell reports, Metro Atlanta outdid the rest of the state in job growth in October, a sign that despite the pressures on consumers and companies alike, holiday spending in the region started strong, according to the Georgia Department of Labor. The region added 23,500 jobs last month, 84% of the state’s expansion, the department said.

Committee approves recommendations to reform foster care and adoption in Georgia
Asia Ashley reports, after a series of meetings on foster care and adoption reform, the Georgia Senate Study Committee on Foster Care and Adoption committee approved recommendations at its fourth and final meeting Nov. 27. Committee chair Sen. Kay Kirkpatrick, R-32, said some of recommendations can be accomplished through legislation and may require budget approvals, while some can be accomplished through DFCS without any legislative intervention.

Georgia GOP senators float court-ordered political map that seems to target two incumbent Democrats
Stanley Dunlap reports that Georgia Senate Republicans on Monday released a court-ordered revision of a redistricting map that would shift the concentration of Black voters in a several legislative districts. The proposed maps contemplate Senate Republicans drawing new districts to eliminate the metro Atlanta turf of Democratic Sens. Elena Parent and Jason Esteves, who now represent districts consisting of a voting age population that is primarily white.

New state Senate map creates two new Black majority districts
Dave Williams reports that a proposed state Senate redistricting map released Monday would create two additional Black majority districts in the General Assembly’s upper chamber in keeping with a federal court order. Senate District 17 in Henry and Newton counties and Senate District 28 in Douglas and Fulton counties would become majority Black under the proposed map, released two days ahead of a special legislative session on redistricting beginning Wednesday.
