Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter has died
Emma Hurt reports that Rosalynn Carter, wife of former president Jimmy Carter, lifelong mental health advocate and co-founder of the Atlanta-based Carter Center, has died at age 96 at her home in Plains, Ga. Carter was a trailblazer in leading more than five decades of national advocacy for mental health awareness, destigmatization and policy reform –– a cause she picked up as the first lady of Georgia, carried on as first lady of the United States and continued championing as a private citizen through her work at The Carter Center.

Spelman receives $750K grant to boost local Black entrepreneurs
Mirtha Donastorg reports that Spelman College has received a nearly $750,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce for a new incubator program for local entrepreneurs, which will be housed at the school’s Center for Black Entrepreneurship. Over the next three years, the Launch Incubator For Traction (LIFT) will give 48 early-stage Black tech founders in the metro area (16 per year) access to mentorship, investors, education and other local resources.

Environmental groups call for federal action after regulators OK Georgia Power coal ash permit
Jill Nolin reports that environmental advocates are calling on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to act after state regulators issued a final permit signing off on Georgia Power’s plans to leave coal ash partly submerged in groundwater at Floyd County’s Plant Hammond. The permit is the first to be finalized under Georgia’s state-run coal ash disposal permitting program.

Grant aims to plug underserved Black communities into electric transportation
John Deem reports that upfront cost continues to be a roadblock in Georgia’s shift to electric vehicles. That’s especially true in low-income communities of color, even though those areas could benefit from emissions-free transportation options. With a $1.2 million U.S. Department of Energy grant, a trio of advocacy groups aims to ensure that underserved Black communities in Atlanta, Savannah and Albany plug into available federal funds to support “equitable, accessible, electric mobility initiatives.”

Georgia Southwestern fastest-growing institution in state system
Staff reports that Georgia Southwestern State University marked another record-breaking enrollment with a total of 3,415 students in the fall of 2023, an 11% increase from last year and the highest percentage growth in the University System of Georgia. Among USG’s 26 public colleges and universities, the fall semester annual report stated increases were seen at 23 institutions.

States’ limits on birth centers don’t help reduce maternal mortality, advocates say
Asia Ashley reports that a recent CDC report showed that Georgia was one of four states — including Iowa, Missouri and Texas — that saw an increased infant mortality rate from 2021 to 2022. In Georgia, just in general, Black babies are two times more likely to die before their first birthday as compared to white babies, and Black moms are almost three times more likely to die as compared to white women,” said Tamara Mason, a director of Maternal and Child Health Care Collective Impact for March of Dimes for the Atlanta Georgia market.

Kinzinger vows to campaign against Trump in Georgia in 2024

Adam Kinzinger had a few show-stopping comments in Atlanta over the weekend at the Book Festival of the MJCCA to promote “Renegade,” his new hardcover about battling former President Donald Trump and other members of his party during his years in Congress. Kinzinger has previously criticized Trump and the Republicans he says enable the former president.
