MLB All-Star Game Coming to Truist Park in 2025

Staff reports, Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred announced Cobb County’s Truist Park will host the MLB All-Star Game in 2025. The 95th Midsummer Classic will be the first played at Truist Park and the third in Atlanta.

Georgia sheds jobs in October, but many sectors still strong

Michael E. Kanell reports that Georgia’s hiring machine slipped a gear last month, as the economy lost 1,100 jobs despite strong growth in many sectors, the state Department of Labor said Thursday. After many months of fighting through the headwinds of higher interest rates, at least some of the state’s employers pulled back during the month, leaving Georgia with its first monthly job loss since October of last year.

Livestock producers in Whitfield, Murray counties eligible for drought recovery assistance

Staff reports that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) is now accepting applications in eligible counties for the Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP) to provide financial assistance to eligible livestock producers for 2023 grazing losses due to a qualifying drought. The deadline to apply is Jan. 30, 2024.

With a $1.2 million U.S. Department of Energy grant, a trio of advocacy groups aims to ensure that underserved Black communities in Atlanta, Savannah and Albany plug into available federal funds to support “equitable, accessible, electric mobility initiatives.”

State grants controversial coal ash closure permit

Dave Williams reports, the state has issued a permit to Georgia Power for a coal ash pond closure plan at Plant Hammond critics say violates a federal rule against leaving ash in contact with groundwater. The closure of Ash Pond 3 at the plant near Rome is in conjunction with the Atlanta-based utility’s plan to to close all 29 of its coal ash ponds.

Georgia Tech Awarded $1.5M to Build People-Centric Network for National Research Database

Staff reports that open access to research data and information will be key to spur the next wave of solutions to the world’s most complex problems. With that in mind, the National Science Foundation (NSF) is creating the first-ever prototype open knowledge network. With an award of $1.5 million, a Georgia Tech team will design a layer of the network known as a knowledge graph – a tool that facilitates data and knowledge sharing using nodes and edges and is similar to a social network.

Georgia House Republicans looking at full Medicaid expansion

Ariel Hart reports that for the first time in a decade, high-ranking Georgia GOP legislators on Thursday convened a meeting to hear testimony on full Medicaid expansion to all the state’s poor people. At the hearing Thursday, the idea was floated over whether to expand Medicaid in exchange for a political deal to roll back regulations that restrict who can open a new health care business, called Certificate of Need, or CON.
