New work-requirement Medicaid plan sees low enrollment as 300,000 Georgians lose coverage

Asia Ashley reports that through September, more than 300,000 Georgians have been kicked off of Medicaid since April 1 during the national redetermination period; much fewer Georgians — less than 1,500 — have enrolled in the state’s new, alternative and more strict Medicaid program.

Mirtha Donastorg reports that the French ambassador to the U.S. announced in Atlanta on Friday the launch of a new tech initiative to promote collaboration between the private sector, academics and government officials across the Atlantic. Called La Synapse, the initiative is focused on accelerating what French embassy officials referred to as “deeptech,” a category of technology that requires intensive research, development and investment before going to market, but which has the potential to lead to important breakthroughs.

Tourism numbers remain steady

Gordon Jackson reports that tourism numbers dipped after surpassing the previous year’s all-time record by 7.7% in the Golden Isles, but they are expected to rise again. An estimated $256 million in lodging revenue was generated during that time period, according to officials with the Golden Isles Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Diane Wagner reports that a public hearing — and decision — is expected Tuesday night on the Rome-Floyd Development Authority’s request for heavy industrial zoning of about 42 acres of vacant agricultural land at 4805 Huffaker Road. Both the planning staff and Rome Floyd Planning Commission have recommended denial.

Georgia Council on Literacy Upholds Marietta as State Model

Rego Jaquish and Dave Williams report that Georgia’s low literacy rate can be fixed despite the dismal statistics currently plaguing educators, the head of a council of state legislators, literacy experts, teachers, and school district officials said at an event this week. “We will not shrink back from our mission,” Scott Johnson, chairman of the Georgia Council on Literacy, said at the 30-member panel’s second meeting at the Kennesaw State University Convocation Center.

Staff reports that the Dublin Courier Herald Publishing Co. has purchased The Albany Herald, a daily newspaper serving southwest Georgia, from Southern Community Newspapers Inc. Dublin Courier Herald Publishing owns another semi-daily, The Courier Herald, and 17 weekly newspapers in middle and west Georgia.

City of Valdosta awarded Historic Preservation Grant

Staff reports that the City of Valdosta has been awarded a $25,000 Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) grant from the Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. The grant will support the completion of the Valdosta Southside Historic Resource Survey, a significant undertaking to preserve and celebrate the city’s rich historical heritage.

The Georgia Lottery has paid for more than two million 4-year-olds to attend pre-kindergarten programs.

Enrollment struggles continue for narrow increase in Medicaid eligibility for low-income Georgians

Jill Nolin reports that Georgia’s new Medicaid program for low-income adults continues to enroll people at a slow rate, with just 1,300 people so far signing up.  The state planned for about 100,000 people to enroll in the first year for the partial Medicaid expansion program called Georgia Pathways, which launched in July.

Georgia expanding EV charging station network

Dave Williams reports that the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) is expanding a planned network of federally funded electric vehicle charging stations. state Commissioner of Transportation Russell McMurry said Thursday. The state received about $130 million in funding through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program last year to build EV charging stations along Georgia’s interstate highways.
