U.S. treasury secretary visits Savannah

Evan Lasseter reports, in the midst of the Georgia Port Authority’s usual bustle Friday, with rows of containers moving by active cranes overhead, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen took to Savannah for a tour of the port, touting impacts from federal legislation spurring infrastructure growth in coastal Georgia. With a backdrop of four of the port’s new cranes, Yellen dubbed the port the most impressive she’s ever been to.

3M to pay Rome $75 million in PFAS water pollution settlement case

John Bailey reports that the 3M Company will pay $75 million to the City of Rome as part of the settlement of a lawsuit concerning the discharge of toxic PFAS and PFOAS chemicals into waterways. The Minnesota-based chemical manufacturer has pledged to phase out production of PFAS by the end of 2025.

Underwood named Cobb EMC board chairman

Staff reports that Cobb EMC announced that Rudy Underwood has been named chairman of its board of directors, succeeding David Tennant. The member-owned electric cooperative is represented by nine directors elected by its membership, each assigned a geographical district throughout its five-county service territory.

Commission to consider Sea Island housing project this week

Taylor Cooper reports that the Glynn County Commission will likely deal with substantial public pushback on Thursday when it considers whether to “clarify” that the Sea Island Co.’s proposed company housing complex can have four floors of residential space or only three — the limit imposed by county ordinance. In January, the Islands Planning Commission approved a site plan for the property, which is regulated under a planned development text.

Judge allows commission overseeing Georgia prosecutors to proceed for now

Asia Ashley reports that the Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifications Commission will be allowed to proceed with its launch date of Oct. 1 while a handful of legislators continue to challenge the legality of the group in court. Four Georgia prosecutors filed a motion Aug. 24 seeking an injunction to prevent the newly created commission from “conducting any investigation or disciplinary proceedings during the pendency of this litigation.”

Georgia families may face increased child care prices as pandemic-era funding sunsets

Sarah Kallis reports that child care centers will receive their last checks from pandemic-era federal funding on Saturday, Sept. 30. The funds, as part of the American Rescue Plan, stabilized the cost of child care in Georgia, and allowed child care centers to hire more staff and raise salaries.

Georgia communities land federal public safety grants

Dave Williams reports that the Justice Department is awarding more than $6.4 million in grants to local civic groups, governments, and law enforcement agencies in Georgia to support public safety and community justice activities. Fifteen grants will go to recipients in the cities of Albany, Americus, Athens, Butler, Columbus, Macon, Thomasville, Tifton, and Warner Robins.

Warnock, Georgia Democrats ‘gravely concerned’ about impact of Medicaid unwinding error on children

Jill Nolin reports that U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock has spearheaded a letter to Biden administration officials expressing concern about how Georgia is handling the phasing out of a federal rule that had previously blocked states from dropping a person’s Medicaid coverage during the pandemic. The letter is referencing a state systems issue flagged a month ago by Brooks-LaSure’s agency after it was discovered some states may not be auto-renewing enrollees on a person-by-person basis and regardless of the eligibility of others living in their household.

Georgia Department of Labor upgrading unemployment system, cost unclear

T.A. DeFeo reports that the Georgia Department of Labor is upgrading the state’s unemployment system, but officials won’t confirm the cost. Officials said introducing a modern, web-based platform will empower the agency to streamline claim processing, decrease errors and improve fraud detection capabilities.

The Jolt: Government shutdown avoided, but Georgia lawmakers divided

Adam Van Brimmer, Tia Mitchell, Greg Bluestein and Patricia Murphy report, the federal government remains open as legislators, including 11 from Georgia, passed a continuing resolution Saturday to fund operations through Nov. 17. The stopgap measure, signed literally at the 11th hour by President Joe Biden, received support from four of Georgia’s nine U.S. House Republicans as well as all Democrats in the state delegation.
