Morehouse College: new tech training hub
Atlanta’s all-male Morehouse College is one of 10 new locations Apple Inc. has tapped to be included in its coding and creativity (C2) education initiative. The California-based technology company is partnering with Historically Black Colleges and Universities like Morehouse to bring coding and creativity opportunities to their campuses and broader communities. As a C2 hub, Morehouse will be able to grow its profile in technology training and provide opportunities for minorities to gain skills that will lead to lucrative careers.
The school has been learning about the program and working with Apple for the past year. As a newly designated hub to promote coding to the broader community, Morehouse has already launched a coding curriculum for member colleges of the Atlanta University Center. Later this month, Morehouse educators will be part of a group of almost 500 teachers and community leaders participating in an Apple-hosted virtual Community Education Initiative Coding Academy. Participants will learn the building blocks of the company’s user-friendly coding language, Swift, and will work in teams to design app prototypes that address real-world community challenges.
After completing the academy, Morehouse will begin to create a multiplier effect that extends beyond its campus into partnerships with K-12 schools and community stakeholders. Among its potential initiatives are launching coding clubs and courses, hosting community coding events and providing workforce training. These programs will be especially impactful for residents of Southwest Atlanta, an economically challenged Black community.
