The art of “Departures”
This is the last weekend to see “Departures,” an exhibit of nine new paintings by veteran Georgia artist and journalist Robert Claiborne Morris at Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum in Savannah. The work of Morris, senior director of corporate communications for the Georgia Ports Authority, has been featured prominently in numerous museum and gallery exhibitions. He uses impasto to create thick, expressive landscapes rich in dark colors. The latest works depict departures both physical – ships leaving the Savannah port – and spiritual, in which the whirling movement of the vessels and the Savannah River seem to take on their own abstract essence.
