Economic Development: July 2013


North Georgia Jobs: Engineered Floors, LLC is investing $450 million into two new carpet plants, one in Whitfield County and one in Murray County. The two plants combined will employ 2,400 people.

Tourism Dollars: The Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) announced that the state saw $51.2 billion in tourism-related business sales for 2012, a 4.6 percent increase over 2011.

According to the GDEcD, more than 405,000 jobs are directly or indirectly sustained by tourism activities – 10.2 percent of all jobs in the state.

Lowndes County: Express Scripts announced it is hiring up to 125 customer service agents in Valdosta. The St. Louis-based company manages pharmacy benefits for more than 100 million people in the U.S.

Healthcare IT: Health-care software development company PointClear Solutions is relocating its headquarters to Dunwoody, creating 100 to 200 new jobs over the next three years.

Solar Growth: Suniva is adding 48 jobs to its Norcross headquarters as it expands its solar module assembly operations.

Carpet Jobs: Mattex, a Dubai-based carpet backings manufacturer, is building a $60-million extrusion manufacturing plant in Murray County. The plant – the company’s first outside the Middle East – will be between 275,000 and 375,000 square feet and will create 200 jobs over the next three years.

Dawson Steel: Impulse Manufacturing is adding 150 positions at its Dawson County steel fabrication plant over the next three years to supply the nearby Caterpillar production facility in Athens.

Biomass: Green Energy Partners LLC is building a $60-million, 11.5-megawatt biomass facility in DeKalb County. The plant will convert yard waste supplied by the county into electricity, which will then be sold to Georgia Power.

Medical Expansion: Houston Medical Center in Warner Robins is undergoing a $40-million expansion that will include six new surgical suites, several recovery rooms and four pain clinic rooms. The expansion is expected to be completed by 2015. 

HQ Relocation: Software company Overgroup Consulting is moving its headquarters from Pensacola, Fla., to Midtown Atlanta, relocating 25 employees in the process and adding another 15 jobs over the next two years.

Lighting Expansion: Hera Lighting recently completed a $3-million, 20,000-square-foot expansion in Norcross.

Growing: Randstad is relocating its North Ameri-can headquarters for general staffing to a larger Cobb County location and adding 100 jobs over the next two years.
