Economic Development: November 2012


Pharm in Athens: Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Ethicon Inc. is building a 100,000-square-  foot facility in Athens for the production of suture raw materials, creating 75 jobs and making a total investment of $185 million through 2016. The company is also making improvements to its Cornelia site.

LaFayette Expansion: United Synthetics is undergoing a $3-million expansion in LaFayette. A subsidiary of Stein Fibers LLC, the company makes polyester staple fibers at its LaFayette facility for use in furniture, medical devices and household items like pillows and comforters.

Biofuel in Sandersville: General Biofuels Georgia, LLC is building a wood pellet manufacturing plant in Sandersville, representing a $60-million investment and creating 35 jobs. The plant will begin manufacturing industrial-grade wood pellets for a major European utility at the beginning of 2014.

Goodwill Grows: Columbus-based Goodwill Industries of the Southern Rivers is expanding, adding five new retail stores, four new career service centers and one new training center in its two-state, 50-county area. The expansion will add 150 new jobs by the end of summer 2013.

Aerospace Expansion: LMI Aerospace is expanding in Savannah. The company, which supplies structural components, assemblies and kits to the aerospace industry, will add eight new employees and nearly 25,000 square feet of space.

New Agency: Noble Mouse has opened a 22-employee agency in Savannah. The full-service interactive firm also has offices in Los Angeles and Atlanta.

HQ Move: SP Fiber is moving its headquarters from Newberg, Ore., to Dublin. The newsprint and paperboard manufacturer already has a manufacturing facility in Dublin.

More Bioscience: Galectin Therapeutics is moving its headquarters from Boston to Norcross. The fibrotic disease and cancer research company says it chose Gwinnett County because of its proximity to UGA’s Complex Carbohydrate Research Center, considered one of the world’s premier centers for such research.

Tifton Hub: Charlotte, N.C.-based snack maker Snyder’s-Lance has opened a distribution hub in Tifton. The facility will create six new jobs and support another 24 in the area.

Sewon Expands Again: Sewon America Inc., America is under-going a $10-million expansion in LaGrange that will add 150 jobs by the end of the year. Sewon is the largest supplier for Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia’s plant in West Point, providing metal stamping for a variety of automotive parts.
