Despite the chill in the air, MARTA officials and supporters were warmed by the good news at last week’s (Wed., Jan. 7) State of MARTA breakfast. General Manager Keith Parker talked about the ongoing process of transforming the system from good to great and called 2014 a banner year. “This is like a shareholders’ meeting,” he said. “This is your system.” Among the highlights: fiscal stability, increased ridership, improved customer service, no fare increase, improved safety, upgraded bond ratings, employee raises and a vote from Clayton County residents to expand the system into their county. Atlanta's Leisure Ride

The Atlanta Streetcar debuted this month amid talks of expanding transportation choices and the recalibration of transportation funding. It's a good-looking train – extremely comfortable, safe, slow moving and easy to use – and adds a delightful new dimension to the downtown experience. Walking from Ebenezer Church to the King Center streetcar stop, I discovered businesses I didn't know existed, such as Big Mouth Ben's store (pictured below). The formerly homeless rapper offers sundries for the ride and an inspiring life story. That sense of discovery continues on the streetcar, making the 2.7-mile ride seem like a leisurely stroll. New Year, New Transportation Issues

There's no doubt that transportation will be a hot topic in 2015, and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce's Transportation Summit recently held at the Classic Center in Athens revealed a host of items to keep an eye out for in the coming year.   While the long-awaited transportation report from the Joint Study Committee on Critical Transportation Infrastructure Funding was not yet finished when the summit convened Dec. 9, industry experts and government officials predict that next year we'll be looking at solutions to the dwindling gas tax, mass transportation options, more rail and cargo, and an increased emphasis on last-mile delivery.   Gov.
